He proposes that Cambridge Alumni come along to meet and enjoy the area\, including scenic walks\, historic sites – and of course to partake in some regional wines\, accompanied by regional dishes. Peter Elliott (Trinity 1971) lives nearby and will be leading one of the walks and bringing wine from Rose + Paul Malpère for a tasting. \nHe has put together what we hope you will find to be an attractive programme\, from the evening of Friday 17th May to late afternoon on Sunday 19th May\, with an option to stay on for Sunday night for those who would prefer to travel home on Monday. \nHere is the link with all the information\, but highlights include: \n\nA tour of the St Jacques winery\, with wine tasting\nVisits to the property’s 11th Century Chapel\, a tour of the nearby historic town and Abbey of Caunes\, a visit to the Gouffre de Cabrespine\,\nA piano concert of Bach\, Chopin and Ravel given by David Bismuth\nA morning walk on Sunday\, either round the St Jacques property or on a guided walk ‘Following the Tracks of the Visigoths”\n\nThe cost\, excluding accommodation\, is €230 per person covering the activities and all meals except Saturday lunch (which will be paid directly to the restaurant by each guest). For accommodation\, 13 options ranging from gîtes to hotels are suggested in the on-line brochure and participants should contact their preferred location and make their own arrangements. \nThis is an excellent opportunity for those alumni living in South-West France to spend some time with fellow alumni and is an excellent initiative by Graham and Peter. \nTo book\, please compete the attached reservation form and send it  to Tony Banton\, either by email or post as indication on the reservation form.

SUMMARY:Oxford and Cambridge Talk : The Menace of Monolinguism
DESCRIPTION:Thurs 28th March – Oxford and Cambridge Talk : The Menace of Monolinguism \nIs Monolingualism harming us? Does the study of language benefit the individual and society? Can multilingualism contribute towards our health and well-being\, social cohesion and diplomacy? \nWho better to answer these questions than Wendy Ayers-Bennett\, Professor of French Philology and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge and Professorial Fellow in Linguistics at Murray Edwards College\, Cambridge. \nWendy Ayres-Bennett obtained her BA and MA studying Modern Languages\, French and German\, at Girton College\, Cambridge and has since specialised in the evolution and history of the French language and the history of linguistic thought. SUMMARY:The Cambridge Cutting Edge Lecture: Gene Machine
DESCRIPTION:Thurs 7th March 2019 – The Cambridge Cutting Edge Lecture:  Gene Machine\nThe race for the structure of the ribosome — a study in the sociology of science\nEveryone has heard of DNA — the molecule that seems to hold the secrets of all life\, but hardly anyone has heard of the ribosome. While DNA is the blueprint for life it rests inertly within our cells. The ribosome is an enormous molecular machine\, even more ancient than DNA that translates the information in our genes into proteins. These proteins in turn make up much of our bodies and catalyse thousands of processes within our cells. \nA ribosome is a machine no cell can do without\, but until recently\, how this machine worked was a mystery. As well as being essential for life\, its practical importance also lies in the fact that the ribosome is the target of many major antibiotics. A knowledge of the structure of the ribosome is the key to the development of new treatments against deadly infections\, so crucial for the future of mankind. \nIn his lecture Venki Ramakrishnan will outline the extraordinary race between groups of scientists around the world to be the first to uncover the structure of this central element of the human body. It is a story of high science\, rivalry\, generosity and mutual support. In other words it is a story of humanity uncovering one of the secrets of humanity! \nHe will also talk about what he calls the Politics of Recognition in science. It is a well-known adage that the essential first step to a Nobel Prize is to work in a lab where there are already Nobel Laureates — is this true and\, if so\, what does this mean? There have been 12 Nobel Prizes for staff of his own lab since it opened in 1958\, as well as 11 for scientists who have spent time there as visitors. \nVenki is group leader at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. In 2009 he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on ribosomal structure and was knighted in 2012. He is a Member of the US National Academy of Sciences\, Leopoldina and EMBO\, and a Foreign Member of the Indian National Science Academy. In 2015\, he was elected as President of the Royal Society for a five-year term.

Attendees have been encouraged to join the Society – free membership being offered to all current students – and there are now over 70 such members in the Society. This has led to a joint initiative\, together with the French Society in Cambridge to organise a cheese and wine evening in Cambridge. The aim is to allow those members in residence there and their friends to get together\, naturally with a French theme as cheeses will be brought over from France specially for the event\, and you will be able to enjoy them with wines provided by Cambridge Wine Merchants in good company. \nTickets are £8 each and can be obtained on line through the following link – Getqpay registration form – there are still about half-a-dozen left.

Beguiling\, bewigged and Baroque\, Claudia Roick and Nicole Tschaikin\, performing as the exotic Baroque Bitches\, are stars of the cabaret scene in Berlin. Now\, by invitation from the Cambridge Society of Paris\, they are making their début in Paris. This will be something completely different! Sopranos with the voices of angels\, these are no cherubins! But Claudia and Nicole will bewitch you with their outstanding Opéra Variété bringing a whole new perspective to opera\, operetta and Kurt Weil. Perfectly rendered classical and 1920s music with a twist. Wow! \n  \n\n\n\n\nLe Zimmer\nAfter the war of 1870\, some wealthy families from Alsace wanted to remain French Citizens. To do so\, they moved to Paris and founded brasseries. The Zimmers were amongst them\, and their restaurant remains as one of the finest Belle Epoque restaurants in Paris\, recently decorated by Jacques Garcia. Formerly the stamping ground of Sarah Bernhardt\, Richard Strauss\, Emile Zola\, Picasso\, and Toulouse Lautrec\, we have privatised the entire restaurant for a great party; the Cambridge Christmas Dinner\n.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMusic and Magic When you arrive\, as you take your aperitifs\, champagne and kir\, charleston\, swing and boogie woogie music will be played by Christophe Benz\, Paul Marcorelles and Bruno Duyé at the piano\, clarinettist Annie Terramorsi and Thomas Racine  percussion.  During dinner\, Jean- Pierre Crispon conjuror from the Double Fond theatre of magic will pass from table to table performing unbelievable feats of magic: coins that appear and disappear\, cards that defy reason\, maybe even a dove that descends.

SUMMARY:King Edward VIII – An American Life
DESCRIPTION:Thurs 25th October 19:30 – Joint Oxford/Chicago event – King Edward VIII – An American Life\nIt is with great pleasure that the Oxford Society announces a special joint event with the University of Chicago Center in Paris\, to take place on Thursday 25th October at 7.30pm. Special guest\, author\, historian and both a Cambridge (Downing) and Oxford alumnus\, Ted Powell will be joining us to talk on the theme of “King Edward VIII – An American Life”. Although many of us know the story of the abdication\, few of us know the details of his life in America afterwards and how this has influenced the relationship between the United States and the British Royal family (an interesting topic given the recent royal wedding). Ted will be sharing his insights during\, what’s sure to be\, a very stimulating evening. The event will be held at the University of Chicago’s premises in Paris: 6 Rue Thomas Mann\, 75013 Paris. Drinks and nibbles will be provided\, along with the opportunity to buy a signed copy of Ted’s book\, published by Oxford University Press\, at a special discounted rate. Further details can be found here. The event is free of charge but places are limited so be sure to RSVP directly to Bethan Meadowcroft (b.meadowcroft@gmail.com) to reserve a place. P.S.
